It’s a question more and more New Zealanders are asking – just exactly where in the world is my next meal coming from?
Is it from New Zealand, or from Australia, Canada or China?
And who is going to tell me?
New Zealand law does not require a food manufacturer to identify the origin of the contents used in the bag, can or box their product comes in. It does not require point¬ of sale country of origin information to be provided by retailers.
CoOL New Zealand believes consumers are becoming increasingly concerned about the characteristics and qualities of the food products they are putting on the table for their families.
CoOL New Zealand is a coalition of more than 30 consumer groups, producer boards, community interest groups, unions and companies who all believe New Zealand must change its law to make CoOL mandatory on all food labelling.
We believe Kiwi shoppers deserve the right to choose.
CoOL is not a ‘buy local’ campaign. It is not a food safety campaign. It’s about choices.
Mandatory country of origin labelling (MCoOL) is the only way to ensure the consumer gets to make the right choice for them, whether their purchase decision is based on product origin, the price, safety concerns, what the kids like, nutrition needs or just plain old flavour preference!
